If there are Battalions who wish to attend this event please contact General Joe Way. If you come as a Battalion or Brigade, you fight as a Battalion or Brigade. The command staff for your organization will be recoginzed accordingly and your organization will be placed under the appropriate Brigade Commander to facilitate structure.

150^th Anniversary Blue Gray Alliance Battle of Shiloh

This general order will contain information that will be essential for each command in planning and implementing the 150^th Anniversary Blue Gray Alliance Battle of Shiloh. Covered within this document will be:

Division Command Structures

DIVISION COMMAND STRUCTURES

To accurately and historically recreate the Battle of Shiloh the overall CS Command will from this point forward will be referred to as the Army of the Mississippi. Under the command of the Army of the Mississippi will be five functioning Divisions. Each of these Division commands will necessarily be directly subordinate to the overall command according to military decorum and protocol to ensure a successful event.

Each cavalry command that so wishes may camp with their respective Division commanders with the understanding that orders for each cavalry command will come from Col. Chuck Tarwater, CS Cavalry Commander and that every Cavalry command will function under Col. Tarwaters command on commencement of each battle.

GUIDELINES FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT AND FUNCTION OF DIVISION HEADQUARTERS

The following structure and procedures should be put in place within each Division. It is recommended that the same structure and procedures be used within each Division at the Brigade and Battalion level.

Upon arrival on site, each of the Division commanders or his designee shall establish a Division headquarters for their respective Division. Once the headquarters is established the Division commander or designee will let the Army of the Mississippi command staff know of the presence of the Division Headquarters establishment and will notify the Army of the Mississippi command staff at the moment when the Division commander is in his camp and functioning.
An officer of the day will be established at each Division headquarters. The officer serving as the officer of the day may rotate between all of the staff members present within that Division headquarters. An officer of the day shall be established and identified in each Division headquarters twenty four hours a day beginning Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 8 a.m. or at the point which the command staff for that Division arrives on site. During daytime hours the officer of the day will be denoted in appearance according to historically accurate interpretations. The sash of the officer of the day will be worn draped over the right shoulder and will be tied in a knot at his left side using his leather accoutrements to hold same in place. During night hours the sash of the responsible officer of the day shall be draped over the front tent fly pole or tent pole. A lantern will remain burning at the same front tent fly pole or tent pole so that the officer of the day has his quarters clearly marked. It will not be necessary for the officer of the day to remain awake through the night. Marking of the tent with sash and lantern shall suffice as a means to contact the officer of the day for each Division should the need arise.
All orders from the Army of the Mississippi Headquarters will be sent to each Division command in written form. The orders will be delivered to the Division Adjutant whose job it will be to deliver same to their commanding officer. The Division Adjutants tent should be easily identifiable and staffed at all times with someone who is authorized to receive orders. A return must be signed and sent back to Army of the Mississippi headquarters to show proper receipt of said orders. The courier who delivers the orders will remain at the point of delivery until a return is given to him.
Division Headquarters will be manned twenty four hours a day starting Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 8 a.m. or whenever the Division command staff arrives on site.
A modern radio will be issued to those members of the Division command staff designated to receive same by their Division commanders. The modern radio will be an emergency communication device that will allow the Division commands to call for medical or fire assistance when necessary and needed. More detailed response protocols for medical and fire emergencies will be sent out soon. Traffic upon this modern radio will kept to a minimum. Period written communications to and from headquarters, unless of an emergency nature, should not be replaced by the modern radios. Batteries will be reissued daily by courier.
Division Quartermasters will monitor the amenities within their command’s area and report all shortages or issues to the Army of the Mississippi command staff.

REPORTS

The Army of the Mississippi will require the following reports to be submitted at the following times. Please be aware that when submitting reports to the Army of the Mississippi command staff, consolidated reports should be submitted. Please do your job and consolidate these reports before sending them to the Army of the Mississippi command staff. Reports should be delivered to the Army of the Mississippi Adjutant General or his designee only.

The AAG for the Army of the Mississippi is Lt. Col. Doug Coone.

The following times are established for Morning Reports which shall establish troop strength within each Division prior to each day’s battle. Do not be late in submission of these reports. Proper scenario planning depends on accurate information.

Sunday, April 1, 2012 @ 7:30 a.m.

It is highly encouraged that weapons inspections be performed at company muster at the beginning of each morning. All weapons are required to be in serviceable condition to participate in the battles. A weapons inspection will be performed at the Division level in formation prior to each of the battles. A consolidated weapons inspection form will need to be delivered to the Army of the Mississippi AIG, Lt. Col. Michael Pierpoint immediately prior to the battle. Lt. Col. Pierpoint will make himself visible and available for delivery of said reports and will report directly to Gen. Way the absence of any reports from any command. Form up times that will be posted within this document shortly have taken into account the extra minutes that it will require to perform these weapons inspections. The Artillery Division command will certify that each of the pieces participating in each battle are safe and will send written confirmation that all necessary inspections of the piece have been performed. This written confirmation will be sent to Lt. Col. Michael Pierpoint who will in turn notify Gen. Way and his Chief of Staff of completion of this task. Nathan Stark, Wagonmaster, will specify a time that is appropriate for the inspection of the wagons, wagon harnesses, and horse drawn artillery piece harnesses and communicate same to the Chief of Staff, Army of the Mississippi who will accompany the Wagonmaster during the inspections. The Wagonmaster shall indicate, in writing, that all necessary equipment and animals have successfully passed the required inspections. Written confirmation will be delivered to Lt. Col. Michael Pierpoint who will in turn notify Gen. Way of completion of this task.

Weapons inspections and equipment inspections are mandatory for all participants in order to ensure a safe, accident free event weekend.

HISTORICAL ASSIGNMENTS FOR EACH COMMAND

The following assignments are made for the Army of the Mississippi for the 150^th Anniversary Battle of Shiloh.

Battle Name: Fallen Timbers Battle/Overnight Campaign

Battle Time: Thursday, March 29, 2012 thru Friday, March 30, 2012

Special Instructions: All commands must be formed in the Drill Field at 3 p.m. outfitted completely for an overnight campaign on the Fallen Timbers original battlefield. The column will depart the drill field at exactly 3:15 p.m. without exception. Any commands not in place and ready to leave will be left. There will be scattered skirmishes with Federal forces through the evening and night on Thursday night with the recreation of the Fallen Timbers battle occurring at 9 a.m. Friday morning. Upon completion of the Fallen Timbers battle the column will move back to the main event site static camps with an estimated arrival time of around noon. This will be a bare bones campaign camp. Pickets will be utilized. Modern toilet facilities will be staged within a reasonable distance of the camp area without intruding on the period appearance of the camp. All food items and other personal belongings will necessarily be carried on the person. There will be no wagon transportation for gear.

Unit portrayls will be based on the number of participants present in each Division.

Battle Name: Shiloh Church/Crossroads

Battle Time: Daylight Saturday morning

Special Instructions: The battle will commence with skirmishers at daylight. Specific scenario details will be provided to each Division commander. All commands will form in the drill field and perform the necessary weapons inspections no later than 6:15 a.m.. For the purposes of this event daylight is recognized as 6:45 a.m.. All commands shall be ready to begin the battle at 6:45 a.m. sharp on Saturday morning. All artillery pieces will be placed on Friday night including limber boxes. Those pieces placed on Friday night that will be participating in this battle will be picketed for safety and protection of the piece. There will be no motorized vehicles moving within the event site on Saturday morning in order to present an authentic atmosphere for this battle. It is highly recommended that period light sources be utilized on Saturday before daylight. An emergency (modern) flashlight may be carried by the 1^st Sgt of each company but it’s use should be strictly in the case of medical emergency or extreme safety concerns.

Battle Name: Hornet’s Nest, Bloody Pond, Peach Orchard, Wheat Field, Bell’s cotton field

Battle Time: 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012

Special Instructions: All commands will form in the drill field in order to perform all weapons inspections. Commands should ready themselves as quickly as possible so that immediate deployment may occur. This battle will be fought on the northern edge of the property so it will take some time for the column to move to that area and position itself. Historical assignments are as follows:

Pond will be portrayed by the Dismounted Cavalry

1^st Division Cavalry will portray Brewer

2^nd Division King will portray Gibson (which merges with Bowen), Jackson and Chalmbers

3^rd Division Huckabee will portray Wood and Shaver

3^rd Division Cavalry will portray Wharton

Battle Name: Grant’s counter attack, Willow Oaks Pond

Battle Time: 12 noon, Sunday, April 1, 2012

Special instructions: 2^nd Division King will galvanize to more historically portray the reinforcement of Grant. All commands will form on the drill field at 11 a.m. to perform weapons inspections prior to battle. Historical assignments are as follows:

1^st Division Hamby will portray Russell and Pond

3^rd Division Huckabee will portray Wood and Anderson

Meeting schedule for Division Commanders.

The following schedule has been developed for meetings involving Division Commanders. All five Division commanders will utilize this meeting schedule at Army of the Mississippi Headquarters. It is at the discretion of each Division commander as to whether they would like to have their Chief of Staff and Adjutant accompany them to listen in on the meetings.

Meeting Schedule for Division Staff

All Division command staffs will meet thirty minutes prior to each of the above mentioned Division Commanders meetings in order to discuss any issues necessary including but not limited to amenities, issues within the camps, safety issues or any other topic deemed appropriate. Any issue that can not be resolved in the staff meeting will then have the opportunity to be passed to the Division Commanders meeting for resolution. You may present just one member or all members of your staff you deem necessary to attend this meeting. We want to work in a spirit of cooperation to make sure you and your commands get the things you need in a timely manner.

Subsequent orders will be sent as more information develops and becomes necessary for distribution.
